Understanding Self-Regulation

Self-regulation is the ability to manage emotions, behaviors, and reactions in different situations.

Examples of Self-Regulation:

  • Taking deep breaths when upset

  • Waiting for a turn

  • Asking for help instead of reacting

How Teachers Can Support It:

  • Model calm behavior (“I’m feeling frustrated, so I’m taking a breath”)

  • Create a calm-down corner

  • Teach strategies BEFORE behaviors happen
